Aussie women confront Canadian wilds

The first Australian team to compete in Canada’s gut busting Yukon River Quest are not Olympians or super athletes. They are ordinary Sydney women aged between 49 and 62 with a difference.  Each has survived breast cancer, or is a close supporter of someone who has. The ‘Yukon Buddies’ as the team is known are all members of the Sydney dragonboat club, Dragons Abreast.

By race time mid 2010, nine months of blood, sweat and tears will have gone into preparing for the 740km ordeal.

"A Sporting Chance" Sports equipment drive

OxfamUQ is running the second annual Sporting Chance Sports Equipment Drive to raise equipment for Queensland academies participating in the Federal Government’s ‘Sporting Chance’ program. The Sporting Chance program seeks to use sport as a means of improving Indigenous health outcomes, while at the same time giving school students more opportunities to get active!

If you have gear to donate, bring it to Campbell Place, University of Queensland St Lucia campus, on Close the Gap Day, Thursday March 25th, from 10am-2pm. If you can’t make it on the day, you can donate at the UQ Sport & Fitness Centre Reception until Sunday March 28th.

All new and used sports equipment and footwear welcome. A raffle will be held for a signed Brisbane Broncos jersey and QLD/Broncos (NRL) merchandise. Oxfam merchandise is also on sale.
